Thoughtless cashier?

In my local community a few elderly people have sadly passed away. For a while it seemed like there was one a day. So sad.
There were a bunch of us in the grocery store and the woman serving said
"Well, who is going to get it today from the grim reaper?"
To which one of the customers told her "that's neat, he won't come from you as your too old" and left her stunned.
