How did people "troll" before the internet?

Here is an example of adolescent trolling, in the form of prank phone calls.

Once, a friend and I, about age 14 at the time, called a number at random.

"Is Frank Wall there?" I asked. "Sorry, wrong number."

A few minutes later, he called the same number.

"Is Judy Wall there?" No

A few minutes later, "Is George Wall there?" No

A few minutes later, "Is Susan Wall there?" No. "Well, if none of the four Walls are there, how does your roof stay up?"
