The funny part of that story was, if I remember right, that [i]had[/i] his rocket worked as he had planned, it still wouldn't have gone anywhere near outer space.
It would have gone the height of a really tall building, like a sky scraper, or something close to that at best. That was the extent of the power of his rocket.
So had his great plan of a home made rocket, capable of carrying a man up into sky or space, and back down to earth safely been even realistic, it wouldn't have given him any more of a superior vantage point to gain evidence, than any odd person with a window seat on a commercial airplane. It was the weirdest and most pointless enterprise to risk your life for... but hey, provided some laughs for those watching, and to each his own, I guess. He was not harming anyone else in the process, and at least the spirit of inquiry is something to root for. Maybe. :)
