Is it safer to say I like you or I don't like you?

I know this is a long time ago but I think it’s safer to say “I like you” because it doesn’t have to be in a crush kind of way. It can just be “You’re cool. You’re nice. I like hanging out with you.” Kind of way. Saying “I don’t like you” gives a bit more negative impact
