Backhanded compliments, anyone?

I just received this one: "Yer somewhat hot... for a Canadian"

Gee, thanks! 😊 Should I tell him I'm Irish and that my avatar is an Aussie?

I am surprised people are so surprised by this - it's a time-honored compliment sub-genre...also known as giving it with one hand and taking it away with the other...or anti-flattery.

Some of the. great ones I'd received or overheard:

For such a big girl, you don't sweat much.

(To my daughter, at 12, from her aunt, my sister- and my daughter is renowned for her smile): You would have such a beautiful smile if your teeth weren't so big.

Too bad the rest of your body isn't like your legs. You have great legs.

Many start with the foundation of 'you would...if only'

You would be pretty if you would only lose weight.

You would be popular if only you weren't boring.

You're smart, but men like a woman who can cook.

@Mamapolo2016 Or maybe it was to get her to respond back?
@wazoo9191 Probably a ham-handed attempt at being clever and forlorn hope of provoking her to prove she IS hot...for a Canadian.
@wazoo9191 I always assumed Canadians were hot - or they would freeze

LOL. In this instance I am 100% sure he was trying to get her to reply back.
@wazoo9191 Never underestimate some people's tendency to not listen when they talk.

LOL. It was me who said it. :)
@wazoo9191 Wow. How'd that work out for you?

Bad....
@wazoo9191 Color me so surprised. Small hint. Know when to stop talking. AFTER the compliment, BEFORE the veiled insult. Really, it's not difficult.
