the Cold War
absurdly slow modems
age of consent was 14, which seems insane now

Noone would dare admit they were gay back then, I think things have changed for the better in that department.
The age of consent was 16 over here.....
I remember those shoulder pads well, along with spray on jeans.
I remember getting money from those pay phones. We used to shove some cardboard up the hole and when someone would make a call, somehow we would pull the cardboard out and money would follow. @SW-User
@pennynoodles I'm guessing you're not from London. I knew loads of openly gay people in the 80s.

No I'm not. Plus I was a child/teen in the 80s so I probably wouldn't have known too many anyway. @TopOfTheWorld
@pennynoodles ok fair enough. I was a late teen in the early 80s and I guess London was different to the rest of the country when it came to people being openly out of the closet.

@TopOfTheWorld there was only one out couple in my year and they went through hell.
@SW-User at school? Actually I don't remember any at mine in the 70s.

@TopOfTheWorld Yes, in high school. I knew a few more who were only out to friends (I hung out with the art nerds, who were a pretty accepting bunch), but they were the only two who didn't hide it. This was the late 80s, so it was probably a bit more open by then, but the abuse they got was disgusting.
@SW-User that's terrible. I think it's better now in schools. There's still violent hate crime against gay people though, it's not gone away completely.
