its winter ,most people have mice ,they are just very smart
most never notice or see them ,but more people have mice then know they have mice
now a rat ,you usually notice their droppings ,but they are good at staying hid too ,,

@rckt148 they turn up regularly in our lofts this time of year. Traps are constantly set. Hazard of a 400 year old house 😕

@Cheesecake I love to work on homes that old ,and I could make it rough for them to get in ,but new studies show rats adapt ,,they can even eat poison that kills their natural enemies who eat them so they have even less to worry about ,
Mice are not quite as bad but both destroy your stuff to make nests .
I went to get grits out of the pantry (I rarely eat them ) and the box was light ,inside the grits were gone ,all of them ,but a mouse and babies were in the box
I guess they were in the process of making the box a home .
I learned how to get the traps super easy to set off
baited it with pot seeds and peanut butter ,they can't resist the pot seed
Now I don't smoke pot anymore but I do know someone I can ask for their seeds
They learn to avoid traps when they see others die in them ,,but they can't resist the peanut butter and pot seed ,,they will keep at it until they finally set off the trap
But you are right in a home that old its hard to block them ,,but I would use a flashing ,expansion foam and steel wool and any place light can get in ,plug it

@rckt148 yes, I concur with all of that, apart from the pot seeds. The British authorities frown upon that - especially when one works for them! Unless of course one could use hemp seed instead. Perfectly legitimate fishing bait, as long as you don't let it sprout! Peanut butter definitely a good idea. I have used chocolate and sultanas with it to good effect in my traps. There are so many ways in for the little critters, I tend to leave the mice to it unless there's a problem - like keeping us awake at night with their scrabbling. Rats, however, I can't abide. It's all-out war. Luckily, at the moment we have a couple of excellent ratters among our outdoor cats - and not keeping chickens helps too, as the vermin don't have such an attraction to our little homestead. I loved the story about the grits packet. I won't ask if you found the mouse family a safe home outside .... ☺

@Cheesecake I have 2 snakes now ,Indigo's
Rattle snakes won't come around where they are and I have heard any rodents in the duct work after this huge rat I got a glimpse of .
I set traps and I heard them all go off ,
I open a cabinet in time to see it ,as big as a cat I kid you not .
I shoot where I seen it go ,but I can hear it banging in the duct work .
Well my son comes in saying there is a huge snake in the yard ,I go check it out and its an indigo and a smaller one (the big one has been here some time ).
I tell him how to tell it from a cotton mouth ,but to leave them alone .
I hear beating and banging and not another mouse or sign of a rat since .
I killed 3 cotton mouths here after the hurricanes we had this summer ,so my son knew the difference ,he come in frantic to get me to show me a huge one under our blueberry trees (they are overgrown they are no longer bush's )
So I am glad to know he knows the difference .
Have you seen the movie the green mile ?
Maybe those mice are in some little mouse circus ,,I do live in Florida ,
But I found the ones in the Grit box in North Carolina .that all I'm saying LOL.
I do not smoke weed but I do know who can get me seeds
Even my Mom before she passed asked me "Can you get me some more of those pot seeds ,your right ,those buggers can't resist them " LOL
In the US with weed now becoming legal I am sure they will be either easier or harder to get ,,I hear after 3rd generation they are as worthless as hemp anyway .Have a great day young man

@rckt148 and the same to you. Thanks for the fascinating glimpse into your life. Those snakes sound useful! 😁
