What happens when some you don't sleep for 48 hours.

I think I had 2-hour nap each day and with minimum caffeine.

I have gone 5 days no sleep
in service we were on duty 36 hours and I was part of a search and rescue crew ,
we found getting up to a SAR alarm blasting made us feel like we had hangovers and get on scene and we forgot something we needed for this case ,
So we just started staying up.
But after service it was a habit I couldn't break
and when I sleep I sleep so hard no one can wake me ,and if they try I come up afraid and ready to fight .
Now after years of it ,it has damaged my heart
so when you can't sleep you still need to lay down ,make it easier on the organs to do their job ,,and coffee does not help
but hospitals have found residents learn more and forget less on extended shifts ,and the 12 hour days are no sweat
but long periods of it can cause damage to your normal sleep cycle (No REM Sleep)
and over long periods damage your heart as I found out ,
I used to love getting my second wind ,it was kind of a high
but now I have trouble sleeping day or night
I wouldn't advise it for prolonged periods ,my advice would be to at least lay down and relay
