Sharks can drown when pulled backward because water gets inside their gills. The process of breathing in a shark is interrupted when pulled backward.

If the bowl is really small and you don't aerate the water I suppose the oxygen gets depleted after a while.

@Deadcutie I still don't see how it would drown it...the fish would simply die from the poison and not from being drowned and leaving it outta water would dry it out

@melissasmithh drowning is essentially asphyxiation. Water keeps oxygen from combining with your blood cells.
Keeping a fish out of water, or poisoning the water so that the fish can no longer facilitate the exchange of oxygen is basically the same principle
