When I was much, much younger…

I envisioned the archetypal "Englishman" through actors

Leo McKern

Ian Richardson

and (of all people)

John Hillerman

None of whom, it turns out, were even English. 😳

Haha yeah I know a lot of Australian and Scottish actors can speak received pronunciation and it's largely used in theatre plays because of it's great clarity.

So it makes sense why Leo McKern and Ian Richardson both spoke that way as they did a lot of theatre work and there probably wouldn't of been that much work for actors who could only speak with Australian and Scottish accents.

No idea what John Hillerman's story was though as I only knew him from Magnum PI and yeah I would of just assumed he was another Shakespearean type theatre actor.

A couple of people who caught me out though is David Tennant, I had no idea he was Scottish and slightly off beat James Doohan who played Scotty in Star Trek, like who would of thought he wasn't Scottish?😅

Some of the first movies I saw were Sound of Music and Mary Poppins (probably my mother's choice, not mine), and I assumed the lead characters were British. So I was a bit shocked to learn that Christopher Plummer was born and raised in Canada! At least Julie Andrews is truly English.

Yes,Leo McKern was an Australian,as I guess you know - I used to enjoy watching "Rumpole of the Bailey"back in its day.

@bijouxbroussard
“Where am l?”
“In the Village”
“What do you want?”
“Information”
“Who are you?”
“Number Two”
“Who is Number One?!”
“You are….Number Six”

The answer was there all along!
@Vetrov I used to watch this. The beginning shows what happened to set up the series that follows. 👍🏻

Did you know Mr French (Charles Sebastian Thomas) from the family affair (1966-71) was really English?

He was what I grew up around as being English.

LOVED McKern as Rumpole, but to me the epitome of the English gentleman was Patrick MacNee as John Steed in THE AVENGERS.

I used to love Rumpole. And basically all of those series on Mystery. Prime Suspect with Helen Mirren was my favorite.
