I certainly ended up with a red face when this happened. I had to visit a farm as part of my work one day. I didn't bring any wellington boots and it was very, very, muddy. I knew I was in trouble when I was almost knee deep and I couldn't move my shoes at all. I had to slip my feet out of them and proceed in my socks!

@Harriet03 Good point! They had been buried in 18" of thick mud by this point. It was very difficult to get them out!! My socks finished up looking rather interesting!
