Did you know: about the Blood Falls?

Blood Falls is a real geological phenomenon located in Antarctica's Taylor Glacier, but it is not made of blood. The waterfall's striking red color comes from iron oxide (rust) and iron-rich nanospheres, formed when ancient, hypersaline meltwater trapped beneath the ice meets the surface and oxidizes. This iron-rich brine remains liquid at subzero temperatures due to its high salt content.

What is Blood Falls?

Location:
It is found at the terminus of Taylor Glacier in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica.
Appearance: The falls appear as a vividly red waterfall, a stark contrast to the surrounding white ice.

Discovery:
It was discovered in 1911 by British geologist Thomas Griffith Taylor.

What causes the color?

Iron Oxide:
The red color is caused by the oxidation of iron in the water when it is exposed to air at the surface.

Microbial Ecosystem:

The iron originates from iron-rich nanospheres, created by a unique microbial ecosystem that lives in the briny, iron-rich water trapped beneath the glacier.

Why does it flow?
Hypersaline Brine:
The water is a hypersaline (super salty) brine, which has a lower freezing point than freshwater.

Latent Heat:
This high salt content, combined with the latent heat of freezing within the subglacial environment, prevents the brine from freezing even at subzero temperatures.

Significance:
Blood Falls is a window into a hidden, ancient ecosystem of microbial life trapped for millions of years under the ice.
Scientists study it to understand deep subsurface life and to find clues about potential life on other planets.

Looks like a bad night on the toilet.
Yeah. Its the iron oxides in the ice melting.
