Did you know: Male seahorses give birth

This is a unique adaptation in the animal kingdom.
How it happens
During courtship, the male seahorse fills his brood pouch with water and "dances" with the female.
The female transfers her eggs into the male's pouch.
The male incubates the embryos in the pouch, which is similar to a female mammal's uterus.
The male supplies nutrients to the embryos.
After a gestation period of about two to four weeks, the male gives birth by rhythmically contracting his abdominal muscles.
Other notes
The male can give birth to up to 1,000 babies.
The babies, called fry, are at the mercy of predators for the first few weeks of their lives.
Genetic data suggests that seahorse labor might involve a similar process to labor in female mammals.
Male pregnancy is also seen in other fish, including seadragons, pipehorses, and pipefishes

Yes. What shocked me at the time was finding out they're actual fish (and not e.g. mollusca or similar invertebrates)

And I haven't seen one irl in years :(
@Elessar I've seen only one in my lifetime

@Bexsy When I was a kid sometimes I found the skeletons on the beach (and sea urchins' as well). Now both are basically disappeared

I saw one last time a couple of years ago in the Venetian lagoon, half-canouflaged/chilling in seaweeds, so I guess we still have them but fewer? Idk
Yes, I heard about that when a biology book mentioning this was banned for being "LGBTQ+ propaganda" 🙄

Cool. I knew this one

I bet we’d get some different ideas about bodily autonomy if humans did this. 🤔
@Straylight i bet you're right
