What kinds of vehicles did you learn how to drive in?

I started learning at age 17 in 2006. At home, it was my parents' 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan. That thing was a total nightmare for someone learning how to drive, with its poor rear visibility and crappy handling. For Driver's Ed class at school, it was a Ford Taurus which was way better for a learner.

An old beat up M-38 Army Surplus Jeep. Made in the early 50's and Dad used it as his hunting vehicle.
@Ontheroad I bet that would’ve been fun to drive.

@bijouxbroussard It definitely was... especially for a kid of about 13. He would let me drive it when we were out running up and down the hills and valleys where he liked to hunt near San Miguel, CA. Nothing much out there for me to run into 😁. Plus, while I was learning to drive, I got to imagine I was a soldier looking for the enemy. Took me a long time to figure out he taught me to drive that thing so he could have a chauffeur 🤣 - worked out for both of us.
@Ontheroad Indeed ! 😄

@SweetMae You lucky (she) devil ;-)

@Stillwaiting 4 on the floor....
@SweetMae Atta girl!
I've driven and learned on a stick shift, old farm trucks, automatics of course, buses, and a 650 Hornet motorcycle.
PTCdresser57 · 61-69, M
1972 Datsun B 210 hatchback
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
@PTCdresser57I don't recall it being a very bad car for the era, but the acceleration was poor.
She bought that to replace a Chevy Vega, it used a quart of oil every month.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@DallasCowboysFan I've read about the Chevy Vega lol.
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
@SubstantialKick Yeah, people don't reminisce about Chevy Vegas like they do about 65 Mustangs, 67 Camaros and Smokey and the Bandit Trans Ams.
Tractors first .. then a '68 Ford 3/4 ton pick up and a couple grain trucks

[c=BF0080]I learned with cars and only learned to parallel park with a massive pick up truck on city streets. My dad told me while I had my permit, “If you can park this easily, it’s yours for the weekend.” [/c]
MellyMel22 · F
@SubstantialKick [c=BF0080]I get it, I know many people who hate it. My assigned space is actually a parallel parking space. It’s great when people park over my lines 😡[/c]
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@MellyMel22 I wish my subdivision had assigned parking 😂.

@SubstantialKick [c=BF0080]Condo life 😂[/c]
A few actually. An old Geo. Old Cavalier. Chevy Cobalt. Chevy Tahoe. A Camry

One was a friends, one was my brothers, the others were stolen. Nobody ever taught me I just hopped in & drove 🤷

Ford Pinto and sometimes was allowed to drive dad Thunderbird. Before that it was an old three on a tree pickup in grandfather's back pasture.
easterniowegin · 51-55, M
I learned on an old farm truck..... 60s gmc pickup with a heavy clutch. Began driving in the fields at abt 9yo.
Of course driving tractors around also.
Our driver’s ed vehicle was a 1975 Gran Torino. At home I practiced in a 1970 Toyota Corona, which became my car. And later, my husband bought a VW Cabriolet and taught me how to use the shift.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@bijouxbroussard A smaller vehicle definitely would have been better to practice with. Unfortunately, our other vehicle was a Volvo 740 wagon with no power steering that would have been worse than the van.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
72 chevy station wagon.
But i first drove a 67 chevy truck, three on the tree😁
So you were essentially steering a large box with a blunt pole?
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@stratosranger It was like driving a school bus, lmao.
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
I can drive anything up to 7.5 tonnes and buses and coaches .
Havesomefun2 · 56-60, M
@Rhode57 only a 13 seats me
TrunkZ · 56-60, M
This but a four door version

SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@TrunkZ Nice 👍🏾.
easterniowegin · 51-55, M
@TrunkZ brings memories for me. Friend and i bought a 74 impala 4dr for $400, cut the top off and had a huge topless car our senior yr of hs. Lots of fun in that huge car. 🙃
Lilymoon · F
I had a driving instructor I think he drove a Datsun lol
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
My dad had a 2003 Chevy Express van
It sucked😂
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@JRVanguard I can only imagine, that heavy ass full-size van 😂 .
likesnatural · 70-79, M
1940 Plymouth then 1950 Dodge
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
1952 Dodge 1/2 ton.
Highskirt · 56-60, M
A mini metro
my Dad's Volvo
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Early 80s Buick Regal(ALL green!), '82 Z28. Really, though, I drove go-karts as a kid, so learning to drive was a snap.
A 1977 Chevy Nomad van that my dad kept for many more years than you'd think. But the vehicle I took to driving classes was a 78 Volvo wagon.
