1pebbles Proud of you ,sounds like you did a Great job .
I have raised 10 kids all total ..my 3 daughters and my ex sister in laws 2 girls ,3 of my Grandkids and a bunch of their cousins .(We are still at taking in troubled teens ,getting them back in school and supporting them until they finish high school ,and nudge them to go on to trade school or college .
I had to work while disabled to take care of all of us ,$660.00 a month was not enough to pay for chorus gowns and all the trips they took singing with an ensemble ,with so many trying to take my kids from me again ,because I am disabled ,and I used to be an addict and a drunk.
We also had a family singing group and preformed all over the country together .
The were the first to graduate in my family ,I quit in the 9th grade since I had to support myself since I was 14,it was to hard working a full time job and going to school;
but I did pass the Naval Battery Test at 16 to join the US Coast Guard
I was a boat crewmen /small boat engineer at 17 ,a Coxswain by the time I was 18
All of the kids that lived under my roof (and I was a single parent ) graduated high school ,,3 of them went on to college now they are full time nurses .
(Some don't seem to understand just going to college does not endure you a good job ,sometimes you have to go back to learn a trade in high demand )
My eldest Granddaughter finished high school with 1 year of college under her belt ,she was on the duel enrollment program .she graduated top of her class with honors and a 6 yr full ride scholarship .
My Grandson also finished with a year of college under his belt in aviation .
He is now a lead man for Haco Aviation ..Certified in everything but avionics
Soon he plans to go for that and his pilots licence ,he is only 20 .
My sons Mom finished top of her class ,valedictorian ,she went straight into nursing school ,graduated the only one with over 100 and a 4.0 GPA
Now she is a Nurse as well ,He Mom ,I also helped go to college ,she is also a Nurse with a masters working for the VA as an administrator and on several boards .She was picking Grapes and peanuts for a living when I came back into her life .
So though I did not teach them myself (other then leading by example and preparing them for a tough world ),someone had to make the money
I seen to it they got full advantage of a public education.
As a result of the Swine Flue scare of 1976 I have an auto immune disease eating my spine ..so I have 12 fully decompressed discs ,spurs in both shoulders
both knees bone to bone ,a bad heart and a collapsed lung .
But in severe pain I worked to make a living to see they all succeeded and they have ,now their kids are raising the bar .
I have 1 more to go ,the one that I mentioned
His IQ is over 145 ,but he has one major draw back ..his Mom
She is also a genius ,but due to no fault of her own she became an addict
and she has fought her demons the last 12 yrs .but now she has them under control and she is going for another degree in Psychology (as good of a nurse as she is (and thankfully nothing about her addictions on her record )I don't know why she needs it ,but at least she is once again trying to better herself )
My kids are now all home owners .their kids now all own land to build homes on .
So I guess its not so much about how you get there as it is
You never give up until you do .
With all they have had to deal with ,I am just proud to say mine all have diploma's ,and they all make me very proud .(a lot to be thankful for in this day and age )
It was hell on me getting them there .
I was suppose to be in a wheel chair before I was 45 ,the damage to my spine is extensive ,but I refused to give up ,I was going to see to it my kids had the chances I never had ,,but I thank God you didn't need a diploma to join the service in 1976 ,or no telling where I would have ended up .
Not many from my home town have been more successful then I have been .or as blessed . Though I do come from a long line of men and women to be proud of
though back in their day ,schooling was a luxury few in the south were privileged to get . They were all still very successful
(My Dads oldest Brother and his wife are both highly educated and their Daughter did go on to become a high school teacher as did both of her sons .
I am kind of embarrassed by the length of my posts
But maybe they can inspire someone that feels an education is a waste of time
When today it is a key you just can't be successful without one .
