A good understanding of the world and the way it works is essential to be able to become mature. Learning not just basic skills, important though they are, but learning that your own family is part of a wider society and how you (can) relate to it gives genuine choices as an adult about how you might choose to do that. There's obviously much more to education, but that's my starter.

Educating yourself fundamentally means to broaden your horizons. From being in limitedness you want to enlarge yourself.
Right now, the whole education process is just about survival. Education should not be about survival. It should be about broadening your horizons. Because people have become so mad about their economic status, we have twisted education into a way of milking money from the world.
Unfortunately, the form of education that is imparted to people today, despite broadening their information capabilities, makes them very narrow in terms of their perception and inclusion of life around them.

@ABCDEF7 indeed. There's more to living than only surviving.

@ABCDEF7 Education should not be measured solely in terms of economic return. It is a virtue in itself and can add enormously to social value and personal wellbeing.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I agree with @SunshineGirl. We are so specialized now, we lack general knowledge. We should all have a more broad education.

Sure. Many methods are humane and effective! People are likely to learn from experience.
Going through the motions in our society teaches them to accept brutality and the wars, war against Nature and other people. This is how conservatives have won the hearts and minds of people.

Yes.
It’s so very important for one’s personal growth.

You bet I do. I believe the path to peace, among all men, is education. If we raised a society of Rocket Scientists, our people would choose to debate scientific theory rather than make war. War would make no logical sense.

Absolutely! Either school smarts or street smarts, a mix of both is perfect (and rare).

It is my guiding creed and my lifelong passion.

Well, it does exist. And I used to be a teacher, so…
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
Absolutely, but you have to be interested in the subject and apply it some way or it's a waste .

These days I just believe in our ability to do it wrong.

Certainly it exist.

I believe it exist but some people misuse it by teaching lies

Yes, but not just basic education.
Learning should be life-long.

Education is important. But being able to regurgitate something in a book does not make you smart.

@Patriot96
You know what's worse than that even?
Mindless regurgitating what a quad indicted conman says.

@Patriot96 MBA as in Master of Business Administration?
A PhD is an advanced research degree. It is generally self-funded or funded through a grant from a research council or institution. To be awarded the degree you have to prove to peers that you have made a significant contribution to a field of learning. Some of the thesis titles may look bizarre or amusing and that single piece of research may not by itself generate revenue or save lives, but if we don't go through this process knowledge will stagnate and progress will halt.
