What's your take on student loan forgiveness?

Not your political take on it, but your gut level instinct take on it.

My take on it is that we need to do something about the cost of education, consider even if there should be for profit learning institutions and if so, how can we bring the costs in line with the realities of life for those struggling (financially) to get an education.

This 10 to 20k forgiveness program is fine, even in many cases needed, but I think it should be only the first step in a radical overhaul of higher education in the United States.

EDIT:

If you bring politics into the discussion I will delete your comment. If you start using labels, or start throwing insults, I will delete your comment.

I don’t support the idea.

If students aren’t paying back their loans it means by one form or another I’ll be paying it.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@WintaTheAngle If studying becomes unsustainable for most you'll be paying for it too. It's a bigger game than you think.
Ontheroad · M
@Elessar Exactly... uneducated masses are a huge drain on taxpayers.
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
@WintaTheAngle We pay taxes too. Our money pays for things you use also...so maybe you should recognize you aren't the only one paying taxes.

Your taxes support welfare in red states. You seem to be ok with that.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@JaggedLittlePill So pay for your course. My daughter’s education is my priority, not your education.

@Ontheroad @Ontheroad It’s not so black and white as that. I’m a qualified airframe engineer without going to university. I learned my trade in the military which I could now use in civilian life. There are more options out there then people care to admit

@WintaTheAngle Buddy. My household income is around 55,000 for a fanily of four and that doesnt even help us make sure to pay for basic needs. You seem entirely confused and lost. You stiol seem to miss the fact that I PAY THE SAME TAXES AND MY TAXES PAY FOR YOU AND YOUR DAUGHTER'S SHIT TOO.
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
@WintaTheAngle There are not more options. Have the day you deserve.
Ontheroad · M
@WintaTheAngle I got my education while in the military - paid for in full while I served. I took night classes for years while in the Army and the military paid for them. Which means the taxpayers paid for my education... and your training.

Yes, there are some alternative options, but not for the masses and even those alternative options cost the taxpayer.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@JaggedLittlePill It’s not my fault you made bad choices.

I resat my final GCSEs twice while working 2 jobs so I could then join up at 19. I then spent 17 years on an engineering trade and going wherever the goverment decided I should be. I’ve had no advantages over you, I just got on with it. If you don’t like the way your choices have panned out, too bad. It’s for you to resolve.
Ontheroad · M
@WintaTheAngle @JaggedLittlePill Let's not allow this to become an attack those I don't agree with session.

Winta, your situation is your situation and not Jagged's situation. I know many who had no choice and it was not, I repeat, not a choice.

@Ontheroad Okay it’s looking like one of those posts where only one point of view is allowed so I’ll just leave it there.
Ontheroad · M
@WintaTheAngle Okay, that's fine, but I'm open to discussing, just not getting personal and angry. This is not about you or me and all rational thoughts are welcome. We don't have to agree, but we also don't need to make it personal or political.
Ontheroad · M
@DazzaTheHutt I addressed them both and then addressed the one that started the rock throwing.

You don't run out of money. First off, we spend billions each year in various programs that are a direct result of people being uneducated, defaulting on student loans, etc., we can cut the waste in other programs to makeup the difference (think pork barrel spending) and fix our tax codes.
@JaggedLittlePill Winta’s in the UK. Their system, like their healthcare, is probably different from ours.
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
@bijouxbroussard Thank you for pointing this out. I was unaware.

@bijouxbroussard college/Uni education isn't free in UK. It's the most expensive country in Europe for education.
@SW-User Okay. Are loans available specifically for education, with exorbitant interest rates ? It seems like people really get ripped off, here. 🙁

What's an airframe engineer? Are you designing airframes?

I learned my trade in the military which I could now use in civilian life. There are more options out there then people care to admit

I don't know if you realize this, but the taxpayers did pay for your education, in full, while at the same time paying you a salary that allowed you to have a family.
