What are your thoughts on college behind bars?

College for prisoners?

Most companies don't hire felons...

I'd be really interested to see how they do once released from prison with their prison degree 🤔

Watching a Netflix documentary called College Behind Bars
I think it's a smart idea, it may be difficult to find work after a felony but making it harder to find work only has a way of creating hardened criminals.
Could be good. There are some professions that surprisingly don't care about felony record... Lawyer for example. Some other things too, there's also the option to self employ in the major profession.

But like you said, the felony(ies) are an issue. I think inmates would be better served with trade school education. A valuable skill, readily employable after release, few restrictions based on criminal record, and opportunity for an excellent income.

I love hearing stories of people turning their lives around, I also think some offences should be given immediate death penalty

@SW-User I agree
It gives them something productive to do instead of murdering each other and the screws.

I believe it’s a good thing. I hire felons, if I sense something.
They could start a business, themselves. 😊

@Oster1 "if I sense something". What do you mean?
Oster1 · M
@iamnikki We all make mistakes, some worse than others but when I talk to someone, I can see certain things in mannerisms, potential dedication, personality demeanor, how they are relating to others, and eyes, etc. I am looking for many things.

I have this trained ability, to sense “character” in someone.

I also bet that I am more accurate than a psychological makeup or personality test. 😊🌺

I dislike the word 'felon'. I find it dehumanising and a little adolescent ('good guys' and 'bad guys' mentality.) In my country we talk about people being in prison. He went to jail. She got locked up. ...like that. Just a personal view.
A good justice has multiple components:
* A form of punishment for crime
* Protecting society
* Reformation - break the cycle of crime by helping people find ways to be constructive members of society.

I totally support education in prison.

It seems kind of weird that a felon could be released and get a better job than a fine outstanding member of society gets though.

It makes all the sense in the world. I used to some work with prisoners and they're getting more serious about educating inside. Some guys do it just for something to do but a lot more take it seriously.

But you're right that a lot won't get hired because they're felons. That's changing though. Unless I'm mistaken there's like 15 states that don't allow employers to ask about criminal history. I think it should be a federal law. There needs to be a real incentive.

I'm ok with it. Too bad they couldnt focus enough before hand to make a life.

Have a friend that owns a successful hvac company. Another is a well paid welder and one that does pretty decent as a hair stylist....all with degrees earned while incarcerated.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Notanymore sounds like traded/ certificates, which to me, are better options for a prison/prisoner
Notanymore · 36-40, M
@iamnikki you're right and i agree. But they were given associate's degrees for the education portion
Northwest · M
It gives them a chance and puts them on a better track to not reoffend. It also helps make them correctional facilities, instead of penal institutions.
In Ny, as he left office Cuomo pardoned some people, some of them having educated themselves while incarcerated.

Absolutely, It’s got to be about rehabilitation otherwise they come out the same as they were when they went in.
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
Getting an Education or a trade while in prison is fine with me.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@FreeSpirit1 yea but who is gonna hire them, is my thoughts.
@iamnikki They don't always have to work for others - they could start their own business with the knowledge they have learned.
InHeaven · F
That’s nice.... is it free tho? Cause here we have student loans , room, board...
HannahSky · F
It's great. It's slowly changing regarding hiring of people with felonies.
Viper · M
It's better than shank building degree!
