When I was home schooling my retired professor (literature) mom made me read all the damn books. In college I tested out of all the courses I considered (time wasters) and only read chapters , not entire books.
@TexChik Like the movie Gray's Anatomy...the students who were dumb enough to read every word failed, and the ones who highlighted the headings on various chapters and paragraphs were able to pass.
@TexChik I can see how that must have been tough on you, but at least you had someone other than a teacher help with book reports!
I can definitely say that some books they make kids read in school should be changed. There are a lot of really good classics, but there are also a lot of really bad classics. I think they need to look over and pick out the really good ones. I also think schools should include books that have come out after 1950s. There are some books I've read on my own that I think would be appropriate for a class discussion. Books that kids can relate to.
@BlackBloodDemon The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy went on the summer reading list at my high school after one of the older teachers asked me what was that book I was carrying, and she had never heard of it before. I started raving about it, and, as I understand it, it is now required reading in some schools.
@BlackBloodDemon Yes, it was long, long ago...but the teacher appeared to be in her mid-70's, so she wasn't very up on things. The NICE thing is that she was in charge of the summer reading list!
@4meAndyou Very good job you did there. I should have befriended the person who was in charge of the summer reading list when I was in high school. I would have recommended some really good books.
Sometimes I miss having a summer reading list in college. I miss book fairs, too.
@BlackBloodDemon At times, in college, I struggled with the concept that only books that were already considered "classics" could be "classic". I was an avid fan of sci-fi and fantasy at the time, and I thought "Stranger in a Strange Land" by Robert Heinlein should be a classic. My professor was horrified and gave me a D!!!! The second one I ever received in my life. Both of my D's were due to my big mouth....🤣
@BlackBloodDemon Well...I was a Heinlein fan back then. "Stranger in a Strange Land" was the first sci fi book I ever read. Eventually, I think, I read them all...🤣
