What's your view on the concept of homework, the amount and kind that should be given, etc?

If it depends, then give an example of a hypothetical specific scenario.

As a kid i was quite lucky. I had a good set of encyclopedia and i didn't mind the research.
This is pre internet, so i imagine the same task is a lot easier today.

@33person AHH ! Then there's your problem !
How many NEW topics do you cover each week ?
33person · 26-30, M
@Picklebobble2 It depends so much on the particular class. But let's say, on average, 2-3 lessons from a book per week.

@33person Well. Maths is a factual class. Personally i think facts are probably of more importance than....creativity ? (Art; English Literature etc) (NOT that those subjects are worthy of any LESSER attention. Just perhaps in terms of homework not quite so often) so it's probably worth 30 minutes a night

I am a retired teacher.

Back in the 80s when I went to teacher's college, I remember hearing from professors and reading in textbooks that most homework, particularly in the younger grades, is pretty much useless. There is no strong evidence that it helps learning. Apparently, it does have some advantages to assign homework in the 10th to 12th grades because it helps the student become more independent of the classroom situation.

However, whenever an elementary school principal announces that there will be no homework at his or her school, parents go crazy, picket the school and that principal either gets fired or quickly changes his new policy about homework. Parents like home work because it keeps their children out of their hair after work when they're tired from their jobs and have to prepare dinner. And most parents did not go to teacher's college and read those textbooks.

I don’t feel like it should be a thing. I feel like once I leave the school premises, I should be a free bird. I never did my homework at home lol

@TonyPajamas I am more open to this argument than I used to be. I think it'd be good to have access to pages to study and practice so that you can understand what you're learning, but whether or not it's good to force you to complete them, to me, is up for debate.

@33person optional study sheets, sure. I never needed to study, even in Uni, so all that was useless to me. I’m an absorbent person. I only need to be told something once and I understand lol

@TonyPajamas If that genuinely has always worked for you, then there is no reason for anyone to force you to do anything. I just think it's good for the teacher to be able to say, "These exercises are the kind of exercises that would be good for you to do after we talk about X and before we talk about Y, if you were wondering what you should practice."
