pcasper59 · 61-69, F
Yes was paddled as many other students were at school.
Paul7 · 61-69, M
@StrictStepmum I did also and my kids went to private school from our church and they also got spanked in school.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Paul7 and you let your kids get hit??
Rabbit420 · 70-79, M
@Paul7 It wasn't a Catholic School was it? Nuns are notorious for loving to paddle children.!!!
demone75008 · 31-35, F
Yes, received a lot
demone75008 · 31-35, F
@CurrentName Absolutely fine, it was normal for me
Sharon · F
@demone75008 All children got spanked when I was growing up. A lot of young adults, especially young women and those living at home, did too.

Never. I was so well behaved
Sharon · F
@Jenny1234 I didn't know of anyone not getting the slipper a few times and I can't think of anyone who didn't get the cane at least once.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@Sharon we must be from two different countries
Sharon · F
@Jenny1234 We are, I'm from the UK.
Rabbit420 · 70-79, M
Corporal punishment was very prevalent and accepted in the era that I grew up in. All schools, grades 1 though 12 administered some form of corporal punishment, generally a paddle of some type. Contrary to the belief of the "anti paddling" snowflakes, it didn't have any long term detrimental affects on me or damage me mentally in any manner or form. Personally, I think kids were much more well behaved back then!!
Codrin · M
@Rabbit420 Even nowadays some students asked for CPs to be brought back, saying that a paddle (cane) would be a good stimulus for them and woud help them to obtain better results and to be more disciplined and submitted to the authority. In the past, some students chose the paddle instead of detention.
angela2106 · F
yes. Schooldays definitely NOT happiest day of my life. You never forget a school caning.
Rebecca54 · 70-79, F
@Chroniclewriter Looking back I was stupid to leave the school premises during a free study period. I was seen by a member of staff and reported to the head. I knew I was in trouble when I was summoned towards the end of the following day but was surprised when she said that she was going to cane me as I was so close to the end of my school career. I think she only told me I was going to get 6 as I was bending over the chair and they were far harder strokes than my previous 3 strokes. I probably felt the punishment was excessive at the time - I didn't cry but could go straight home to compose myself
Chroniclewriter · 70-79, M
@Rebecca54 The trouble is some heads expected to know where pupils were at all time. Truancy was a frequent crime and challenge when we were all at school; I went off one afternoon at primary school and got a very hard whack from the headmistress (nun)across the palm of the hand. I suppose six bending over a chair can be painful depending on how hard the strokes were applied and what your covering was. It's hard to say if three strokes was enough; it all would depend on the Heads mood at the time. Was the Head nice to you in your remaining time at school. If you were still 17 were you a young member of the upper V1th about to take A.levels. You say you went straight home to compose yourself; did you manage to hide the circumstances from your parents or were you open about it?
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Chroniclewriter that shit is never justified. Never
nevergiveup · 61-69, M
Cane slipper and hand
Lynda70 · F
@Sharon Same here. Misbehave in class and it was out to the front and bend over for 2 or 3 whacks of the slipper (plimsoll) across the seat of my knickers. I had that many times.
Sharon · F
@Lynda70 That's how it was for us too. There was often a queue when homework was due in. ;)
nevergiveup · 61-69, M
@Sharon Pity its still not used as i think there are a lot of kids that could do with it
CurrentName · 51-55, M
I received corporal punishment everywhere, school, church, the streets, anywhere.. My mom was very generous with her correction strategies.
Sharon · F
@CurrentName Same here, except church - only because I didn't go to church.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Sharon

Sorry you went thru that.
Yeah, it's pretty awful
Parents don't realize the scars they leave behind when they do that.

Yes. Went to a tough secondary (11-18) school in a tough city in tough times. A few canings, and regular whacking with a range of plimsols. Sounds outrageous now, but normal for those times.
Sharon · F
@GailCob I got the cane along with a few others for making explosives. We weren't accused of trying to blow up the school though.
GailCob · 61-69, F
@Sharon Our headmaster specialised in hyperbole. I didn't personally see the incident but I was told there was a great deal of white smoke and literally NO DAMAGE. My personal rexperience of his hyperbole was after two of us, in a bit of horse play, dislodged two wall lockers. Minor stuff, but he caned us for DESTROYING the classroom. That is a verbatim memory. Happy Days.
Sharon · F
@GailCob I've met teachers like that, always exaggerating. Having said that, I remember someone saying some fellow students blew the side of a mobile classroom (think Portacabin) out with some "homemade fireworks".
Nope. Goody Two Shoes here. Not especially committed to the school thing…it was someplace I had to go in between reading books. Never got detention. Didn’t play hooky. I took the path of least resistance.
@Mamapolo2016 Avoiding being in trouble comes easy for you! Others really struggle to follow orders.
@Alfred22 I think it was more a matter of security. Our folks usually explained “Why not?” and it usually made sense to me. I translated that into rules outside our home.

Later down the road, during the Vietnam era, my views changed quite a bit. I didn’t burn flags or occupy buildings, but I did protest and add my voice.
Domking · 61-69, M
Well it was not for all, but commonplace if one got caught in serious offence.
I had been caned, despite being the class topper, for these
For smoking in the enclosure of urinals.
For bunking school to go see movies.
For fighting with others (big fights)
Not much of shame, it was a thing that we were a lively lot, and did things without fear.
Basic idea was not to flinch or cringe, stand still, be defiant.
No. I never even got my name in "the book".

No, only deprivation punishment, singling out by the teachers, whispering girls who stare at me and whisper into each other's ears all day and manage to attack me at recess, being forced to write loving verses to America the Beautiful when the killing projects became an issue...
Sharon · F
Yes, many times. Cane and slipper, mostly the slipper (plimsoll).
Chroniclewriter · 70-79, M
I have often wondered whether corporal punishment was used in more schools of a specific type than others in Britain prior to abolition. I get the impression it was used widely in secondary modern schools, sometimes by staff ill qualified to teach, with little academic ambition, or poor disciplinarians. I know boys independent schools used it, often as part of the tradition to breed tough but disciplined gentlemen. How far was it used in girls independent, direct grant and state grammar schools? In the state system I know each county had its rules for corporal punishment and who might administer it.
pip8153 · 70-79, M
@Chroniclewriter Corporal punishment was available at my state grammar school but was not common. PE teachers sometimes used the slipper, other teachers used a ruler but I think the headmaster was the only one to use the cane and that was not very often. This was in the 60s.
alan20 · M
It was routine at my school up to about 16. They certainly taught me how to hate.
TexChik · F
They tried once ... I got arrested ( technically ) the sheriff handcuffed me and drove me out to his farm , released me and handed me a fishing pole ... and we talked about what happened . He knew I had PTSD . No charges were filed . Then his wife fed me and he took me home .
I’m glad it’s no longer allowed

Yes site it is, but is the parent strict enoughsome don’t care what their kids do and the complain when they’re hooked on drugs or worse
@Sophiewargamer Good question about whether handing off the final decision about cane strokes to the parents would allow for equal treatment. Some parents might just "go through the motions" but not place firm strokes. This would be properly termed "parental nullification" of the sentence.
HappyHubby · 31-35, M
Not at school. Italy is a well cultural developed country
nate2244 · 41-45, M
Yes,I went to an ACE school, and if you got into trouble, you got paddled.
firefall · 61-69, M
Yes, canings were common at my school, although I only ever transgressed twice, myself
Sharon · F
@firefall I transgressed loads of times but I didn't always get caught. :)
jackcros · 70-79, M
Yes it was the norm. Cane, plimsoll, strap mainly

Only once. And then they had to deal with my mother. So that never happened again.
TheWildEcho · 61-69, M
@SW-User good on your mum
Whatever4 · 51-55, M
Yes, it was allowed until I got to high school when they changed the law in my state.
Codrin · M
Yup. Wooden rule and switch on the hands, some slaps, had my sideburns or my ears pulled, standing arms-up, sent to cut my hair number one.
celine211 · 22-25, F
Nope fortunately i live in this age
SW-User
Yeah I got whooped.
SW-User
Haha 🤣 @SW-User
BlueRain · 51-55, F

SweetMae · 70-79, F

We had to wear short trousers at primary school and regularly got hit on our bare legs
Elementary parochial school, I had my hands “rulered” once, had asked an “inappropriate” question about the teachings. My father was down there like a bear, upset because they “hit my daughter for asking questions they couldn’t answer”. 😄 But some kids got paddled, and they were very discriminatory in how kids were punished. We moved to the suburbs and I went to another school, where kids were not hit.
