@Chroniclewriter Looking back I was stupid to leave the school premises during a free study period. I was seen by a member of staff and reported to the head. I knew I was in trouble when I was summoned towards the end of the following day but was surprised when she said that she was going to cane me as I was so close to the end of my school career. I think she only told me I was going to get 6 as I was bending over the chair and they were far harder strokes than my previous 3 strokes. I probably felt the punishment was excessive at the time - I didn't cry but could go straight home to compose myself

@Rebecca54 The trouble is some heads expected to know where pupils were at all time. Truancy was a frequent crime and challenge when we were all at school; I went off one afternoon at primary school and got a very hard whack from the headmistress (nun)across the palm of the hand. I suppose six bending over a chair can be painful depending on how hard the strokes were applied and what your covering was. It's hard to say if three strokes was enough; it all would depend on the Heads mood at the time. Was the Head nice to you in your remaining time at school. If you were still 17 were you a young member of the upper V1th about to take A.levels. You say you went straight home to compose yourself; did you manage to hide the circumstances from your parents or were you open about it?

Yes. Went to a tough secondary (11-18) school in a tough city in tough times. A few canings, and regular whacking with a range of plimsols. Sounds outrageous now, but normal for those times.

@Chroniclewriter In terms of the frequent use of the plimsol in the classroom, I don't think sadistic entered into it, at least in the correct sense of someone inflicting pain for their own pleasure. It was just an intolerance of any misbehaviour or lack of attention. Punishment was a word that was used in those days without any embarrassment or any sense that a whacked bottom was anything other than the pupil's just desserts! There was very often a total lack of empathy with the recipient, but I never ever sensed clinical sadism.

That's right. The slipper was just seen as a way of maintaining discipline in the classroom. Some teachers used the slipper more often and/or harder than other but it wasn't really over the top.

It was routine at my school up to about 16. They certainly taught me how to hate.

I have often wondered whether corporal punishment was used in more schools of a specific type than others in Britain prior to abolition. I get the impression it was used widely in secondary modern schools, sometimes by staff ill qualified to teach, with little academic ambition, or poor disciplinarians. I know boys independent schools used it, often as part of the tradition to breed tough but disciplined gentlemen. How far was it used in girls independent, direct grant and state grammar schools? In the state system I know each county had its rules for corporal punishment and who might administer it.

Yes, many times. Cane and slipper, mostly the slipper (plimsoll).
TexChik · F
They tried once ... I got arrested ( technically ) the sheriff handcuffed me and drove me out to his farm , released me and handed me a fishing pole ... and we talked about what happened . He knew I had PTSD . No charges were filed . Then his wife fed me and he took me home .

Yes, canings were common at my school, although I only ever transgressed twice, myself
Sharon · F
@firefall I transgressed loads of times but I didn't always get caught. :)

Yes, slipper in class and cane in the head's. office.
jackcros · 70-79, M
Yes it was the norm. Cane, plimsoll, strap mainly
Codrin · M
Yup. Wooden rule and switch on the hands, some slaps, had my sideburns or my ears pulled, standing arms-up, sent to cut my hair number one.

That in these parts
Elementary parochial school, I had my hands “rulered” once, had asked an “inappropriate” question about the teachings. My father was down there like a bear, upset because they “hit my daughter for asking questions they couldn’t answer”. 😄 But some kids got paddled, and they were very discriminatory in how kids were punished. We moved to the suburbs and I went to another school, where kids were not hit.
