@GailCob Classroom slipperings were a daily occurrence when I was at school.

@Lynda70 sounds rather a scary place. Was it justified or were some teachers rather sadistic or 'over the top'?

@Chroniclewriter In terms of the frequent use of the plimsol in the classroom, I don't think sadistic entered into it, at least in the correct sense of someone inflicting pain for their own pleasure. It was just an intolerance of any misbehaviour or lack of attention. Punishment was a word that was used in those days without any embarrassment or any sense that a whacked bottom was anything other than the pupil's just desserts! There was very often a total lack of empathy with the recipient, but I never ever sensed clinical sadism.

That's right. The slipper was just seen as a way of maintaining discipline in the classroom. Some teachers used the slipper more often and/or harder than other but it wasn't really over the top.
