Homework: good or bad, and how much is too much (at various ages/grades)?

Just wondering what your personal experience has led you to believe.

a little homework a few times a week is good

Homework may be good, but I've never seen this.
When i got homework, it was always redundant as fuck. Stuff we've been learning for a week. Stuff we've been tested on. Yet they want to send us home with more of the same crap. Or want us to make a diagram of the order of the planets. How the fuck is that relavent?

@VolpeTredici Review can be useful to ensure you don't forget things you just spend so much time trying to learn, but of course, it needs to be sensible review. Idk why you have to make a diagram of the order of the planets, but you should have to study a diagram of them that already exists.

@33person Why? What relevance does the order of the planet's have in Life?

@VolpeTredici You ought to know more than that which has direct application in your particular life. It gives you a better perspective of your position in space, which is simply enlightening.

I never did my homework. I spent my free time doing what i felt like. I got good grades.
I understood the reasoning much better as a teacher than as a student. It’s designed to build disciplined study habits, to retain and reinforce the knowledge acquired during classes. Often it encourages students to examine the text from alternate perspectives.

@bijouxbroussard I've always felt that if you didn't have homework, you wouldn't have time to cover nearly as much material in a year. You'd have to sacrifice either breadth, depth, or both. That said, poor-quality teaching and poor-quality homework don't do much good.
@33person That is true. The idea behind regular homework is logical and sound. But it’s only as useful as the skill of the teacher.
