Russian vs ASL

Hello, EP. Omfg, so I have been pondering my predicament for like a full month before I remembered that you guys exists.
So, I don't know whether to take Russian or ASL in the coming semester. Both have their ups and downs.
Russian will build a bridge into learning other slavic languages and languages that use the Cryllic script. It's also pretty cool.
ASL is invaluable in engaging with people that are death and challenged.

What other cons and pros can you guys think off?
I took ASL in college and I never use it. I also learn French . I probably could have learned Spanish but I'd always wanted to take French so I did.

I checked your profile. One of my degrees is in sociolinguistics too.

I would choose Russian because it is widely spoken in North Asia and you will have access to a lot of academic resources that you may not be exposed to as an English speaker. Russian have more translated works from other languages than any other language.

Besides, if you wish to attain another degree in AI, they have very affordable universities which welcome foreigners from all of the globe.

@Miram very interesting. I will definitely consider it. I mean, it would open a lot of doors. Thank you! Btw, as a sociolinguist, what does that entail?

@1angrytitan For me, long qualitative and quantitative studies comparing different language varieties, drawing the implications, helping to produce dictionaries too, studying how the social class correlates with language..etc

It depends on you. Not all sociolinguists are interested in the same activities. Some are able to integrate even more disciplines.

I am impressed that you are taking the time to study another language. Whatever your decision, I am sure it will be a great endeavor.

Always good to learn a language. But the question is, would you ever use it ? As opposed to something like Spanish or Mandarin for example ?
In the world of work, ASL might be considered a skill as well as a language.
Two birds with one stone as the saying goes!

@Picklebobble2 That is very true. You don't have to be hard of hearing to benefit from ASL either. Many birds with one stone.

I'm going to be studying to be a translator and the languages ive been debating on studying are Arabic, Russian, and mandarin. Trust me, I feel your pain XP

@SW-User So true. I have already studied Arabic and I'm currently trying my hand in Hebrew.

Can't you do both? Or, start Russian and later do ASL?
SW-User
@1angrytitan Russian is more complex so maybe start with that. There are many places aside from university to study ASL

@SW-User That's a good way of thinking about it. Thank you.
