A white King piece from Grandpa's chessboard.
My grandfather was the one who taught me chess. When I visit him on vacation, we play for hours, game after game, much to my grandmother's annoyance.
He's so good that even though my game had significantly improved over the years, I was never be able to beat him. Then one day, I check mated him, and thrilled by having done the impossible, I snatched his check mated King and ran around in jubilation. My grandfather was smiling all along.
But, in the midst of all the celebrations, I forgot to return the piece to the chess board box. It was still in my pocket.
I didn't find the piece until the next day, when I got home. It sat on my desk for several years. I kept it because it reminded me of my time with my grandfather, the thrill of playing chess with him, and most importantly, it showed me that if you are persistent and dedicated, you can win in life.
