tRUMP & RFK Jr cripple health care for 9/11 responders

MSNBC reports:

“The Trump administration recently fired the head of the World Trade Center Health Program, and dismissed two-thirds of the entire staff at the program’s parent agency, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The dismissals leave in doubt the future of the initiative that administers health care support for those who developed 9/11-related cancers, respiratory ailments and other medical issues.

First responders and investigators continue to die because of their exposure to the toxic air and materials of the 9/11 sites.
Under the direction of HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Dr. John Howard, administrator of the WTC Health Program, was let go. So too were more than 800 doctors, epidemiologists and staffers throughout NIOSH whom the WTC team relies on to research, identify and address the myriad health issues related to the rescue, recovery and evidence collection efforts at the toxic 9/11 sites.

When law enforcement and rescue workers develop cancers that may stem from those efforts, the WTC unit must first certify that the illness is 9/11-related before those patients can start to receive care under the program.

While the 86 members of the WTC unit appear to remain employed, their essential support network at NIOSH is mostly gone, and officials and advocates assert these cuts will cripple the program.”

My Commentary:
Once again Robert Kennedy, Jr demonstrates why he is unqualified to hold this position.

While tRUMP plows forward with his narcissistic plan to honor himself with a military parade in Washington, DC at the expense of millions of dollars or tax payer’s money and while he attempts to pass huge tax cuts to billionaires, they selfless first responders on that horrible day (funded by tRUMP’s Saudi friends) have their health care funding slashed.

This is unconscionable!

I examined NIOSH's own web-site, via a link in the USA Governmental' site, to learn its purpose.

This revealed that for the size of the nation and scope of the agency's work, it is not a very large organisation, with "more than 1300" (so less than 1400) employees across the USA.

Now, is that 1300+ still there after those 800+ redundancies, or has NIOSH been left with only around 500 staff?

The site explains NIOSH is primarily a research institution, and that it works internationally, sharing research and knowledge on work-related health and safety with equivalent organisations. How will cutting it so drastically, affect that aspect of its work?

....

(I contrast it with the the UK's Health & Safety Executive. That exists primarily to ensure companies follow the relevant laws but far prefers to do so by inspections and advice so accidents and illnesses don't happen. Though it does have investigative and if necessary prosecutorial powers, after such incidents. Nevertheless I'd think it does co-operate with NIOSH and similar in other countries. Like most of the UK's Civil Service it has suffered serious money-saving cuts by both Conservative and Labour governments over the last 40 years, but not on the scale and suddeness of the DOGE activities; and it is for agencies not ministers to decide their own savings after the budget cuts.)
