Autoimmune disease occurs when the body's natural defense system suddenly sees normal cells as invaders and begins destroying those cells by mistake

People age 50 and older taking 2,000 IU (International Units) of vitamin D3 for over five years had a 22% lower relative rate of confirmed autoimmune diagnoses, said study author Dr. Karen Costenbader, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in the division of Rheumatology, Inflammation and Immunity and the director of the lupus program at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
That dosage is two to three times the recommended daily dose of vitamin D for adults, which is 600 IU for people up to 69 years old and 800 IU for those age 70 and up, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Once people had been taking vitamin D for at least two years, the prevention rate from autoimmune disorders rose to 39%, according to the study, published Wednesday in the journal BMJ. The study also found a possible link between taking 1,000 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acid and a reduction in autoimmune disorders, but the association was not statistically significant until possible cases of autoimmune disease -- not just confirmed cases -- were factored into the analysis.
However, the study did find that taking both vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acid supplements, versus the placebo alone, decreased autoimmune disease by about 30%.
Vitamin D toxicity
People should not just run out and start popping vitamin D pills to boost their chances of avoiding autoimmune disease, Costenbader warned, as there are significant consequences to taking too much of the supplement.
Unlike water-soluble vitamins, which the body can easily eliminate, vitamin D is stored in the fat cells of the body and can build up to toxic levels, leading to bone pain and kidney damage.
Because the body makes vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunshine, and milk and other foods like cereals are often fortified with vitamin D, many experts say healthy, younger people are not likely to require vitamin D supplements, especially in amounts over the recommended level of 600 IU/day. Levels do drop in older age, but "I would say everybody should talk to their doctor first before taking 2000 international units of vitamin D on top of whatever else you're taking," Costenbader said. "And there are certain health problems such as kidney stones and hyperparathyroidism (a rise in calcium levels), where you really shouldn't be taking extra vitamin D."
The body attacks itself
Costenbader's study analyzed 25,871 men and women age 50 and older who were participating in VITAL, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled research study designed to see whether taking daily dietary supplements of vitamin D3 (2000 IU) or omega-3 fatty acids (1,000 mg of Omacor fish oil) would reduce the risk for developing cancer, heart disease and stroke in people with no prior history of these illnesses.
That trial showed no benefits from the extra supplementation in preventing either cardiovascular disease or cancer.
Because prior research has shown both vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids derived from seafood can have a positive effect on inflammation and immunity in autoimmune disorders, Costenbader decided to use the same trial to investigate whether the supplements might prevent such diseases. Autoimmune disease occurs when the body's natural defense system suddenly sees normal cells as invaders and begins destroying those cells by mistake. In rheumatoid arthritis, for example, the immune system attacks the lining of joints, creating inflammation, swelling and pain. With psoriasis, overactive T-cells -- which are among the body's best defenders -- cause inflammation that creates raised, scaly patches on the skin.
In Type 1 diabetes, the body's defenders destroy the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. There's even some evidence to show that inflammation throughout the body might be part of the progression of Type 2 diabetes.
Autoimmune disorders can develop at any stage of life but do appear more among older adults, particularly women, Costenbader said.
More research needed
To date, no large randomized clinical trials (considered the gold standard of research) had investigated whether fish oil and vitamin D could actually prevent the development of autoimmune diseases.
"This is the first direct evidence in older adults that taking vitamin D or omega-3 fatty acids -- or a combination -- for five years reduces autoimmune disease incidence, with more pronounced effect after two years of supplementation," Costenbader said.
At five years into the research, the study could not tease apart which of the 80 or more autoimmune diseases might benefit most from vitamin D and fish oil supplements, Costenbader said, but research is continuing. The study is now in its seventh year, she said. and more data should be released in the future.

I take a high dose of vitamin D but my autoimmune diseases are flaring so bad right now.
@iamonfire696 Do you mind speaking of which ones you struggle with?
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON 5000 D3 that my rheumatologist told me to take along with an Omega 3 fatty acid.
@iamonfire696 R.A. is a fking bear. I have it too. And fibro.
(Hugs)

I am looking into more supplements.

Apparently nightshades can exacerbate inflammation, as can gluten and lactose.

Unfortunately, I am not as strict as I ought to be with my eating regiment.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON I have psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis and nail psoriasis. I cut out nightshades, refined sugar, dairy, gluten, dairy and processed food and nothing changed for me. That elimination diet took forever. My body is full of inflammation and I can’t figure it out. I am sorry you deal with this too 💞.
@iamonfire696 Oh crap! I am so sorry dear. Yeah, it's nuts. You really are doing A LOT re. the diet.
I don't know how you can improve here, it's looking excellent IMHO.

I will tell you what helped me,
bc maybe you can do some of this
(and of course it's subjective, right ..).

I was in two very warm /hot climates.
It was dry air (Israel), cleaner air.
I was sweating almost always (almost none of my family has A/C, it's super expensive, only my cousin living in the Kibbutz [near Eilat, Red Sea] in her bungalow had it :) );
sweating is excellent for detoxifying.
I ate clean, I drank no alcohol and minimal gluten and grains.
I exercised modestly (walking) daily.
And I was HAPPY.
Like, was really happy, so my mood was UP and I an almost never this happy...I was seeing my family for the fist time in over 20 years!
Trips to the salt water: We went to the Mediterranean sea and Dead sea, this was a decongestant, and it has other benefits I don't know about, particularly the Dead Sea.

Both my dad and I were feeling crummy on about day 5 of being there.
He goes to me " I feel sick, coughing, sore throat, some aches, nothing major"

Well, I have intentionally detoxed from foods (in Canada, where winter is almost half a fing year!) and I know how sht it can be if it's too hard a detox and I wasn't even doing it at the recommend density or intensity...

Well, I said to dad,
"I think we are both detoxing dad", gave him my reasons.
Yeah. Ultimately, I felt better. But this was in 2014! 8 years ago.

In Cuba it was not as intense, and I did feel better.
In both cases improvement was very fast: in Israel we were for 10 days and in Cuba, two weeks.

I don't know if you are able to implement ANY of this into your life.

Ok.

Alright. I will lay it on the table since you have been so brave and honest:
Fibro, CPTSD, Epstein barr, celiac (lactose and soy issues), indeterminate Lyme (2x wtf.. Lyme specialist said *no*, so I accept that), R.A. yet to be confirmed, some sort of thyroid problem, hypoglycemic, restless leg (dx by a sleep study/and neurologist), ... I am not sure if I am forgetting something or not, sorry, it's a decent list.... 😂
Oh yes! Perimenopause. I am in it. This is NUTS.

@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON I am sorry you are going through all of that. I also have Ankylosing spondylitis and osteoarthritis too. I have inflammation in some of my organs as well. I have chronic migraines that I am on a biologic for too.

When I went away on hot holidays, I always felt better with the heat. I live in canada and it’s very very cold and bitter through the winter.

I am very jealous of people that have good health.

So you understand!... We are NOT in the right climate to actually fully heal.
Alternately we'd have to live for half a year were it is very warm
and who can afford this?

(((Hugs))) Yeah. I don't officially KNOW what other arthritis I have but yeah I also have sciatica ... jesus effing christ.

it's like a book here right? For both of us. I have numbness around my upper back for many years. I have had mild headaches since age 11, no idea why. Tinnitus since 13 (which is almost always managed now) .

I am very nervous to get the X rays and bloodwork, but I know I have to find out, bc otherwise I am stuck, and I refuse to do nothing. I am not going to stop fighting, it's just not an option for me.

I'd love to hear when you find anything that helps you and I will probably post here (I am on FB) if and when I do feel better.

I am so very sorry bc this is not fair, I agree.

I am jealous, like I am happy for YOU all, but, I want this too :D
*Be healthy be happy and please dear Lord,
can I have this also? :) *

Can I ask you, does arthritis affect any of your family members or you only?
For me, it's just me as afar as I know.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON I also have nerve damage (worse than sciatica) down my left leg from surgery. I think living in a warm climate would certainly help much more than winter does.

My grandfather had RA, not psoriatic arthritis. My youngest has psoriasis now which worries me.

Does it run in your family?
[@Iamonfire666]Big fuzzy hugs.

Not that I know of. So that's something odd IMO.

My child has celiac too. I worry, very much.

I know that stress is a killer and for people like US, this is super critical bc it's keeping us in that fight/flight/fright cortisol response and creates cytokines (a cytokine storm) or whatever they are called, which is very bad for autoimmune things.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON I am sorry she deals with that. Thankfully his psoriasis is only in his elbows for now. Mine is on the bottom of my feet, palms of my hands and in my ears. None of these are very pleasant places.

Stress totally flares things up for me too.
@iamonfire696 Thank you so much.

Thank you and sorry that you guys are suffering. It's not fair.

Oh, I just remembered: Esptesin barr is herpes (not sexually transmitted) which I have and lately my healing is compromised. So... I am taking Iodine and Lysine, if I can remember all those things.

Stress is the thing that is affecting me so much, I know it! I can't get away from it.

How do we learn to de stress, in this cultural and literal weather climate?
I need this to happen :) I think it can but how?
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON I do a lot of meditation but I keep picking up these bad bacterial infections because of being immunocompromised. It sucks. I wish for healing for you 💖💕💞.
@iamonfire696 It's really great that you can do this, so vital for that happy mind body soul connection to help our bodies be in a good homeostasis. I am happy for you, it is a great success!

I am sorry about the bacterial infections.

I should get back in touch with the homeopathic people, but there is always the *depression drag me downs*.

Ok, I will close this too.

Thank so very much for all your sharing and well wishes! (((HUGS)))

May your journey provide you with hope, health and happiness.
Your attitude is great and that's so key.

🤗🌼🤍Luna.
