On my dad's side of the family, my Great grandfather had cancer and died, my grandfather and grandmother has cancer and my dad had cancer and died from it. Im not completely sure if ky great grandmother had cancer, i know she died at a young age, my grandmother had trouble talking about. There are genetic components to SEVERAL cancers, but it seems to depend upon the major type (prostate, for instance) as well as the specific actual form.

The DNA bits which have been identified as being associated with a particular cancer are "markers" for that type. It was Angelina Jolie who opted to have a double mastectomy when testing showed she had the marker(s) for the same VERY aggressive breast cancer which killed her mother.

But lifestyle and other things (exposure to certain things, etc.) make a big difference, too.

You need to look into the specific cancers as much as possible. You could also have genetic screening done.
Thank you very much, @Itsjustbrit; I hope you know that there are definitely lifestyle aspects which affect all kinds of health issues, too.

It's really commendable for you to look into this at an age where it can really make a difference. 😊👍

You should talk to a genetic counselor. They can assess your risk based on your family’s cancer history and might suggest genetic testing. They can identify specific gene mutations like BRCA1, BRCA2, or others, that might have increased your family's risk of developing certain cancers.

Just to point out and partly answer one of your inquiries, there are specific genes that are linked to cancer, but it's usually the mutations which lead to cancer. And these mutations are lot of times related to the environment, and sometimes to other illnesses. And in most instances, it is several mutations over time not just one mutation or gene..Which is why you need proper genetic profiling and then adjust your life to decrease the risk, and for early detection by knowing what to get screened /assessed for regularly .
Only a few cancers are influenced by hereditary susceptibility. They would be the likes of breast cancer and colorectal cancer. The majority of cancers are not hereditary in any way. So it would depend on which cancers were in your family history as to whether you are at greater risk or not.
I don’t know for certain but I’ve heard there is potential genetic behaviour that makes cancer more likely in some.

That said each generation had a different approach to how to tackle cancer, so there are no foregone conclusions if you fight it.

Not all cancer is the same. However there are absolutely genetic predispositions to certain kinds of cancer. You can test for a specific gene that leads to high risk of breast cancer.

Eat like your life depends on it (no junk, no sugar and loads of antioxidants)

get extra magnesium. Oxidize your body maxo. Don't internalize the madness of the world especially the outrage

DON'T IGNORE things you should care about no matter WHAT

and YOU WILL NOT GET IT.

Nothing about your genes can overcome your conscious efforts to stay healthy.

Not all cancers have a known cause.
