I understand. It can be like a shot of adrenaline when that news sinks in. For yourself but not always for others. Like elevated awareness and a bit of urgency to propel you forward. I can't recall who wrote it or if I have the title right, but something like "Two years to live" where the author followed the lives with that prognosis and the overall rating was the two years to live was their best years of heir lives. A more recent demonstration of that feeling is Randy Pausch's "Last Lecture" where you can feel his uplifted spirit with every word he spoke.

I've also been through that feeling a few times for different reasons. I have a AAA, an abdominal aortic aneurysm that gets me sent through the scanner tube every year. And I know of too many who have died from ruptured aneurysms to make me cautious about who I talk to about it.

I got the news when I was in the hospital for an undiagnosed abdominal problem... the ER Doc, after having had a CT run on me, said "Hmmm, just what I thought, it's Colon/Rectal Cancer", and said it as casually as I'd say, "Hmm, I'm going to have a BLT for lunch".

His casualness and "it's no big deal" approach in telling me was much like your Doc's and hit me the same way. I thought, "Well, okay, guess I need to see an oncologist", and that was that.

I told only my ex and kept the news to myself for the long period of time while I underwent chemo and radiation treatment, then right before surgery called my children and told them.

Hang in there and I can tell you, keeping an upbeat, positive attitude will get you through it.

@Ontheroad Thank you for that perspective, glad you are here to tell us!

I'm sorry ol' friend. We don't talk much anymore, but maybe you know I just went through cancer. Also, not as bad as many experience. But it's an awful feeling you will wrestle with often.

If you have support, take it. And take good care of you. It's scary for sure but it'll make you stronger.

I hope your journey is smooth as possible and your loved ones are close 馃檹

@AlchemyFox I do know you went through something challenging, but it wasn't my place to mention. You have crossed my mind a few times as you faced it strongly, the way I imagined you would. That was an inspiration.

I am praying it doesn't progress . My brother just found out he has leukemia
Coralmist41-45, F
I wasn't aware you did have lymphoma.... it's certainly understandable that you may be feeling a wide range of emotions. That is definitely good news that it is low grade. And like another here said, there are so many cutting edge treatments that are being discovered all the time in the medical field for various cancers..so You got this. I am sure your team will be right on top of it and know that you have people here that are always around and supportive, and will help you feel positive if you should feel down. I had a friend that got leukemia as an adult (from excessive consumption of fish/mercury) and he has been in remission. So there are def. positives and I have no doubt you are on a good path in your journey my friend. 馃馃尲馃尫

I to have lymphoma In my case it is for the third time going back to 2008. I have been fortunate to have a wonderful medical team in a great hospital and things are looking good. I have had extensive chymo and other treatments and things are looking good. My general health is good
I am single and unattached but have the support of a wonderful family and network of great friends.
It is not easy but there are so many advances in the treatment of cancer that it is no longer what it was and those advances are continuing all the time.
So best wishes to you. Keep positive.

@uncalled4 Sorry to hear about your condition. I have prostate cancer myself and am getting radiation treatments. I have 8 more to go and won't know if it has been effective until July. I feel great.

Depending on your situation your cancer can be removed by a biopsy or it could require more extensive treatment. They claim that you can live five years with it. The problem is that it can spread into your organs and bones, which will be hell on earth.

IMO, your doctor seems kind of weak so you may want to read upon lymphoma so that you will fully understand it. Depending on where you live and what your medical coverage is, you may be able to get a better doctor. You may have to get a PET scan, which is very costly (mine was $11,850 but I only paid a $60 co-payment because I was out-of-network) if you don't have a good insurance plan. https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/pet-scan/about/pac-20385078#:~:text=The%20PET%20scan%20uses%20a,magnetic%20resonance%20imaging%20(MRI).

Based on my experience, you will do yourself a big favor to start treatment ASAP.

I鈥檓 so sorry, what a horrible situation you鈥檝e been put in. It鈥檚 so life changing that the way you process it is just what people will have to accept. But I hope you get a clear path forward soon, waiting is the worst part imo. And I hope you have a good support system.

We're cheering you on. Cancer is scary and some of us just don't know how to react, especially if we've lost someone.
I hope you keep receiving emotional support here on SW and good people can raise you up when you're struggling. May you also be well.

Cancer is a scary word no matter what kind or how treatable.
3 years ago I was diagnosed with a treatable cancer.
Be praying for you and believing you'll recover well.
While I don't have cancer and I can't pretend to know how that feels for you, I don't do well with certain emotions - so I might sit them down and tell them straight that I don't want to see any wild emotions. If they can't handle whatever I'm about to say matter of factly... Then I won't tell them.

It's your illness and news so you have the right to set out how you want it to be dealt with - though you might still get some shock and tears (yes, I don't handle tears well, either). It should cut down on some of the way out there responses for you.

Sorry to hear this. I'm sure it's a lot to process.
I know someone who has a leukemia that's not doing anything, and it's like he doesn't have anything. It's very strange, but I guess it happens. We just usually don't hear about that.
At any rate, scary time right now and I hope you have support and a good medical team.
sladejr56-60, M
Sorry to hear this. But as you said, it's low grade enough that you may need no treatment at all 馃憤
sladejr56-60, M
@Diotrephes he said his dr said he might not need any

I know. That's what my urologist told me about my prostate cancer.

Because such cancers are slow-growing a person can last 5 years bfore dying without treatment. And, because of my age, he prsented it as an option. The others were surgical removal of the prostate, chemo, or 20 radiation treatments. I wanted surgery but he didn't want to do it because of my advanced age and possible complications. I went with the radiationshots, which so far seem to have been the best choice. I won't know until July.

The point being that if you discover you have cancer, IMO, it is best to get it treated ASAP before it causes additional damage. There are no good ways to die and that is a very bad way.

Since you are in the prime age range, I would suggest that you get a thorough exam if possible every so often. It could add years to your life, if that's what you want.
uncalled456-60, M
@Diotrephes That is the plan, but I will know more soon.

Sorry to hear ... be well 馃拹

I,m really sorry about your diagnosis. People hear tge "C" word and ofren react begore knowing the details.

Many cancers caughtcearly enough are very treatable. Is this Hodgkins or non-Hodgkins lymphoma? And what stage are you.... if you don't mind me asking.

Also maybe ask about counselling , just so you can fond a way to process your thoughts

Here if you need a friend
