Its a wonder, with how they keep changing the procedure, that anyone survives. Still got to do a round of compressions and breaths (breathing for the victim is optional now ) if the AED fires.

@TexChik those things are great - they make it almost idiot proof.
OogieBoogie · F
@Nitedoc I was told the reason they did it was that they discovered the most important factor was the chest compressions to get the heart going , and that stopping those compressions to do intermittent breathing was reducing success rates .
I could be wrong .
I suppose ill find out soon when I do my next refresher . I'll ask about that .👍

@OogieBoogie That's true with one person CPR. But with two person CPR they don't switch breathing and compressing anymore. When I asked the instructor why he said (you don't want to swap spit with somebody lying on the street). I can't say I blame him for saying that. Still, This change will destroy the success rate from CPR.

@Nitedoc that is true , the disease factor, especially when HIV and awareness of Hepatitis B came out, changed CPR a lot . Medical kits started to carry dams and now they have mouthpieces for sanitary reasons .
It's a scary thought, that by saving someone's life you could permanently endanger your own 🤷

@OogieBoogie It's my understanding Hep. B is the worst worst offender now. Aids is harder to catch but is still a very serious threat. I'm not sure which way I may do it in the future I'm sad to say.

@OogieBoogie A bag valve mask is $20 on Amazon. But they are bulky to carry.
OogieBoogie · F
@TexChik I never carry anything except my kit in my car. So unless something happens in a carpark ...I'm down to manual only if I had to🤷
Luckily I've never had to do it . And only once seen it being done in the street years ago - and only one person was giving aid.
At work we have the mouthpiece thingy and the AED. Hope i never have to use it. The idea of it scares the shit outta me .

@OogieBoogie You mean the AED's? Yes they are great. They are only used to re-start a heart that has already stopped beating. They only use AED's on TV for everyone.
OogieBoogie · F
@Nitedoc We just got one a year or two ago .
I think they're a great idea.
It's too easy to freak out in an emergency and forget everything you've learnt .
Shit, my mind goes blank just putting in my pin number 😂

@TexChik I just googled it, I think he means one of these .
Now I know what they are called . I've seen these in the first aid room.

@OogieBoogie A pocket mask? Covid bait.
OogieBoogie · F
@TexChik no, it's a real thing in medic kits .
It's used as an hygienic barrier for CPR.
I've seen them, I've only just now worked out what they were for.
I think they are an upgrade from this ...

@OogieBoogie You're right about this. The compressions are to keep the heart going and to pump blood from the heart to the brain as well as the body. You should do compressions until a para-medic is in position and ready to take over for you.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@OogieBoogie Look at it like this. If you have the pocket mask on you, somebody can use it on you.
TexChik · F
@OogieBoogie It's hygienic for fluid-born pathogens, not airborne ones like covid. Will you stick your face that close to some unconscious person with the knowledge that covid is around? While not a disaster, the way the manipulated numbers say it was, it's still something to be avoided if possible.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@OogieBoogie Yes, that's the pocket/belt type.
OogieBoogie · F
@Nitedoc I'm always scared of if it happened I'll do something wrong .
And then there's the fear of having to call emergency services first , when you should be getting onto CPR asap.
God...I hope it never happens .
