I've heard or seen the phrase "cognitive dissonance" but not really understood its meaning.
It is clear now - a very common phenomenon and we see it in many SW threads where the more you question someone's cherished but mistaken or improvable belief, the more aggressively they defend it!

@ArishMell Yes, it's an interesting concept. Behind it the impossibility for an individual to accept that he might have been wrong to put his trust where he did - in people, or governments, etc. It appears that the shock produced by such a realisation is too much for people to bear, so they just reject it.
