It is intended, designed, and proven to "reduce hospitalisations, severe illnesses and deaths".
Covid-19 is by definition a high contagious highly infectious disease. So you get an awful lot of it about so a lot of people get ill, and regardless some will still be hospitalised and die.
But the vaccine is proven (look at death rate spikes in countries like the UK.
So flu. We've had flu vaccine for years. Still have flu outbreaks and deaths. Because a vaccine never stops you catching it only for the majority helps you fight it
