i think its its very similar in taste. kind of like a yogurt smoothie. a bit tangier though and dare i say creamier

No, it's liquid and sourer. Its consistency is closer to milk than yogurt. Yogurt tends to be thicker and you eat it with a spoon. The higher percentage of fat/protein it has, the thicker and creamier it gets. Kefir is something you pour into a glass and drink like milk.

@HollowayRoadN19 With yogurts, you usually check if it contains bifidobacterium lactis. Health-wise, kefir should be more beneficial though. It contains more culture, not just bacterium but also good yeast.
Where I live, you can buy 3 different kinds of these "milks" with culture. One is called kefir/kefir milk (with various bacteria and yeast cultures), another is acidophilus milk (with Lactobacillus acidophilus) and bifidus milk (with Bifidobacterium lactis).

I read that the best way is to make your own kefir from regular milk by adding culture into it and leave it to ferment. I've never had it thought, I only drank commercial milks that allegedly only have 2 lab-made cultures as opposed to 40-60 cultures of homemade kefir.
