The solution is elementary. Someone, remembering "things go better with Coke", reasoned that rum--being a liquid thing--is also something which should be enhanced by the addition of this dark beverage. Thus, the two were combined.
But how that ingenious experimenter contrived to get it into you--THAT is the true mystery!
