If he asks her out yes, if she asks him then no, but he should anyway.

Adogslife · 61-69, M
You ask, you pay

She asks, you offer to pay regardless. If she insists, ask her if you can cover the tip.

Either way, if you’re a man, you should be prepared to pay in either scenario.

My wife and I both have good jobs. We had our own rule. Your town, you pay. Most of the time that was fun and worked. If we were going somewhere very expensive, I picked up the check no matter what the location was.

On vacation we just tried to have some semblance of fairness based on overall spending.

I'm a big fan on the one to initiate the date to be the one who offers to pay. I'm okay with a split as well, but I think the offer should at least be extended by the one to ask. Naturally that's a first date thing. Dynamics after that are between individuals.

I think splitting is more the expectation these days though.
If I ask them to dinner, then I am paying. If they insist on splitting the check, no problem.

If they insist on paying, I ask them if they are expecting me to put out. Its definitely an ice breaker. LOL

Not expected but nice if he pays for the first few then us women can take him out and once a relationship is established it should go back and forth.
@FreeorLonely No. Disagree. A Gf "pays her guy back" in a dozen ways everyday. Little things we ever think of. So the guy should pay for every date.... every part of it. No matter what it costs.
FreeorLonely · 51-55, F
@SumTingWong 😳 well ok then and yes you’re right a good gf does do lots of other things…things to make his life easier and vice versa.
Lostpoet · M
I always do cause it shows them that I'm invested in their happiness.
@Lostpoet You're a gentleman. 👍
Absolutely. I tried walking out of a supermarket without paying for a bag of dates, and the store manager threatened to call the cops. Men should always pay for dates!

I pay especially if I ask her out. I'm old fashioned. Plus I pay even for family.

Never liked people paying on my behalf.

It gives them an advantage.

In a committed relationship, it is different.

Then again, I am not from the west originally.
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
I’m old school; if I ask I pay.
unregisteredhypercam4 · 22-25, M
@SageWanderer That's why I specified under 40. But hey, respect.
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@unregisteredhypercam4 I understand and know that financial issues are different in your age group.
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
I usually pay
@vetguy1991 Did you ever get in trouble when you didn't pay? The manager at my supermarket threatened to call the cops when I almost walked out of the store with a bag of dates I didn't pay for.

I actually will not allow anyone to pay for me.
KentuckyFriedFloozy · 26-30, F
@JimboSaturn you'd be getting venmo'd later too
Chiefjustice · 46-50, M
@KentuckyFriedFloozy why dont you allow anyone to pay for you?
KentuckyFriedFloozy · 26-30, F
@Chiefjustice because I feel comfortable paying for myself. I don't like feeling like owing people anything. Even if they don't see it that way, I do. A Lannister always pays their debts.
Kiesel · 56-60, M
Not sure if it’s still expected
I still like to though
YoMomma ·
it depends on who initiated the date i guess
Dont worry ladies i will happily pay for that happy meal 😁
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
if your date expects you to pay, then you're dating a gold digger. It'll be very very expensive to move past this point.

If they ask first, yes.
Would be the gentlemen thing to do
BohoBabe · M
Not really, but it does depend on the region.
At the same time we should be asking if women are expected to put out if they do?
