What're some good questions to ask on a first date?

I guess a lot of that depends on the tone of the first date. On a scale of going out for coffee dutch style to one person is treating the other to an expensive dinner at a fancy restaurant, what tone of formality is this first date set to?

For a more casual coffee date I would ask things: What do you usually like to do in your spare time? Do you have any pets? What is the speed of an unladen swallow?

For a more serious date I would dig into the deeper questions. Do you have any goals for the future? Are you looking for long term or just some fun? Do you want kids? African or European?

Basically I would match the tone of questions to the formality of the date. If it's super casual keep the questions light and fun. If it's very formal I would feel invited to deeper, more serious questions.

Does your wife know you are meeting me?

Don't ask questions that can be answered with yes or no. Many guys ask lots of questions without telling much about themselves.

Can I borrow a few quid?
