I grew up near one of the main venues for Northern Soul, The Torch in Tunstall.
I was a bit too young for it but it was very popular. A group of Northern soul fans used to come to our youth discos on a Wednesday and take over the dance floor. I had older cousins who were big fans and introduced me to the music.

I've seen archival footage of Northern Soul dancing.
A lot of the music has roots in United States’ R&B.

@bijouxbroussard The majority of songs that were popular with the UK's Northern Soul music scene were all B-Sides of hit singles by artists like Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Little Richard, Fats Domino and Smokey Robinson among others.
@Sidewinder That’s right.
