My grandma is Polish and survived nazi Germany,
She said that some (definitely not all) soldiers would let her dad sneak in food to the prisoners, didn't really want to be SS etc
But others were brutal, threatened to kill anyone sneaking in food,
But when the tables turned, the brutal ones were killed but the others were spared.
I don't know how true this is, I'm just going by the stories my grandma tells me
