Everything woke turns to shit- anonymous
Nimediapresentations · 41-45, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Simple and to the point.

Frostcloud · F
smartphones became mainstream. electric vehicles. ipods. the instant pot. CRISPR gene editing therapy. owlet dream socks. and don't get me wrong i love 80s music but i'd be a silly liar to say new music isn't objectively good too.

if there's one thing humanity is good at it's inventing things to make our lives easier and happier. that didn't just stop after the year 2000. it happens every day, we just have to notice it 🙂‍↕

@Frostcloud New music is good, true, but is it really that different from what came before? Think about it.
peterlee · M
Certainly not in Europe.

French peaked in the early sixties.
But Eastern Europe has a lot to offer now.

A lot has changed.... Everything has turned beige
ArishMell · 70-79, M
No, of course it hasn't.

You take only one area of the arts - music - and whether you like more recent work is a matter of personal taste, but even in that area alone there is plenty of new music being created.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Nimediapresentations Oh, pop music yes - driven as it is by artificial fashion although that article does show other factors such as the compartrmenting of tastes and ideas by [anti]social-media.

Take music as a whole though and chart pop material is just one tiny part of it; and music only part of culture as a whole - the OP asks about culture, not specifically pop music.

What I think has happened in pop music over the decades is a big drop in originality and variety.

@ArishMell And then, there are movies: also recycled. There is new stuff, but hiw many Star Wars can there be? Marvel/DC putting out stuff that has been around for sixty to ninety years. The first Superman comic came out in 1932. He is still very much a partof our culture. Other superheroes have come along since then and have become so entrenched in our culture. But still, everyone loves Superman, even if he is "outdated." But the idea of the superhero is now an old one.

@Nimediapresentations Sadly so, all driven by mere money-men with tuppeny-ha'penny minds and two-and-half-million bank balances...

The same minds who take over things like children's literature and pretend their committees of staff script-writers can produce new stories at least as good as the originals.

I think "superhero" principle has been around since time immemorial, in all sort of ways and most of them just as daft as Superman and his ilk. Look at the Classical Greek and Roman mythology, for example, or the Scandinavian sagas.

Luckily there are plenty of people in all fields willing to experiment, to create new work.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
No, it continues to evolve. Maybe you;re just looking in the wrong places? But, then again, things do seem to happen in cycles, and "There is nothing new under the sun", etc.
Nimediapresentations · 41-45, M
Why do you think this might be?
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@Nimediapresentations Like so many things, creativity has been taken over by computers. There is still good music and art out there if you look.
Nimediapresentations · 41-45, M
@ChipmunkErnie Yes, there is. But the MSM never talks about the Petersens or Allison Young. All the good artists seem to be underground YouTubers, and I think many don’t want too much spotlight.
In the quest to make everyday life easier, we’ve complicated many other aspects…
