Do you hate being a southerner because of slavery? I do, that's why I hide my southern accent from others

I think we need to teach more about Southern abolitionists to give people from the south positive figures to relate to. There may have been less of them, and it was actually dangerous to express such ideals, but that actually made it more brave and bold for them to do so. Cassius Clay of Kentucky had an antislavery publication he had to move north to Ohio due to various threats. Angelina Grimke was born to wealth in South Carolina and became both an abolitionist and a feminist. In 1827, there were 106 anti-slavery societies in the South, with an estimated 6625 members.

That bravery to embrace what is morally right when in the minority of your contemporaries is the real spirit of rebellion that should be celebrated.

The path to pride in heritage is not to defend the wrongs of the past, but to identify with the heroes that dared to go against the grain.
