What's the psychology behind parents who brag about their children's achievements to everyone

but to their kids' faces they act indifferent or even criticize them (for example "you could have done better")?

If I had to guess, I'd say they are afraid that if they praise their kids, their egos will get too inflated? Idk.

@LordShadowfire interesting, some teachers admit to doing that too, often by holding off better grades so that the good students don't get their egos inflated like you said and as a result stop studying
