What does 'alpha male' and 'alpha female' mean?

I read them as 'cocky boss' types who think they should always lead and everyone else should follow.

@gmgun I guess. I wouldn't know. Not being socially and sexually self confident doesn't lead to getting to explore those aspects of adult human consumption.
