I Am A Real Werewolf
Werewolves and lycanthropes are the same thing. There is no difference between the two, no special genome that one has that the other does not, nor are werewolves fated to only shift during the full moon, or lack control of their shifts.
Why would there even be a separation between the two resulting in two specific categories? Lycanthrope is just a different name for werewolf, the same way ailuranthrope is a different name for werecat, and therianthrope (the historical version of the word, not what it's been redefined as) is just a different name for shapeshifter. Yet, I only see this weird "lycan vs were" distinction with wolves. Plus, the moon doesn't control anyone's shifts, really. You could psychologically have an inclination to shift around that time, and may feel pumped for it, but it's not going to force you to shift. And control is built with practice of shifting, so this isn't something unique to "lycans", nor are the forms that werewolves take unique to them alone.
Nor do a majority of the breeds I see popping up nowadays actual breeds. There is no loup-garou (there is in mythology, but the one I'm talking about has been cited as having five forms specifically, and in reality originates from a certain role-playing game), there is no jaeger, there are no bloodchasers, there are none of these new breeds that I'm seeing pop up. Real breeds can be found with something as simple as a Google search (it's not that easy to find the correct information, granted, but you can find the breed name at least by simply searching up "werewolves" and going from there) and don't have all these "mystical" elements and link to fiction in the way that the breeds I'm seeing tend to.
I'm going to leave off with this note, otherkin and werewolves are not the same. Maybe they once were able to be grouped under the same umbrella, but they're not the same now, and they don't fit under the classifications. An otherkin is anyone who identifies in a non-physical manner as a non-human being- this has been the definition for several years now, so besides confusing others, you send the wrong message for both communities when you claim to be otherkin but also a real werewolf. They're not the same, and grouping them together publicly tends to hurt everyone, rather than help, especially since both communities have very different wants and needs.
