An elk that suddenly appears in front of your car.
@ninalanyon

Whoa...! Has something like this happened to you?
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@rinkydinkydoink No but it has almost happened to a couple of people I know in Norway. One actually hit the elk but not head on so there was only some damage to the car. He was most annoyed because the law here requires you to stop and wait for the viltnemda (wildlife authority) to turn up with a search party so that you can assist them in finding it. They then decide whether it should be shot to put it out of its misery.

The problem with elk is that they have long spindly legs which puts them at windscreen level and they weigh half a ton or more. If you hit one at speed the elk just comes straight through the windscreen which is likely fatal for the driver.

Actual deaths are rare but the risk is real.
@ninalanyon

Thanks for the detailed response. I like the whole part about the viltnemda - I'd assist in any way I could.

@rinkydinkydoink Unasked for detailed responses are one of my vices, once I get started on an explanation I find it hard to stop. Strange really because at school when faced with the demand for an essay my mind just froze completely!
@ninalanyon

LOL - school is different. No kids but hopeless dweebs want to be there.

@rinkydinkydoink Apart from things like Latin, Eng. Lit., French, PE, I actually enjoyed school. It wasn't until I got to university and spoke to people from other parts of the country that i understood that my schools had been exceptionally good in most respects. Just as useless at foreign languages as any other unfortunately though.

@rinkydinkydoink I think you did. No matter, I've been called worse. And to be honest it's not a word that is properly familiar to me so it has no sting, I'm not familiar with the context or etymology. :-)
@ninalanyon

It means a superb student and all-round swell person 👍😎
@ninalanyon That is wild. My father lives in the hills and a few times riding back from a visit we would encounter deer, especially in the winter months.
