Progress report: Canada and US Trade negotiations implode in literally the 11th hour...

...when Trump's Secretary of Economics goon, Howard Sputnik showed up unexpectedly JUST before a Trade Deal was signed at the midnight deadline and TOLD Canada that ALL American cars have to be built in the USA, not Canada and that Canadians HAVE TO buy cars made by Americans...

...and that no reduction in American-imposed tariffs on Canadian products entering the USA would be possible despite weeks of negotiating to reduce those tariffs for the benefit of the American people who ultimately will pay the price, not Canada.

The Canadian team was immediately called back to Canada by Prime Minister Mark Carney after everything literally imploded in the final minutes of the meeting in Washington and then Carney called Trump and told him that a trade deal with Canada was no longer possible.

I was reading about this a couple of hours ago in the English media. Everybody around the world is watching to see if Carney's hardball tactic is successful.

Good luck, Canada!

It makes you wonder what the end game in Trump's mind was.... Did he really think they would cave in at the last moment or is there something else afoot...

PM Mark Carney announced here in Canada about 2 hours ago, that Canada is officially at war with the USA.

This entire fiasco was about Trump forcing Canada into being America's 51st State by upending the trade negotiations at the last minute, thinking Canada would cave-in, mistakenly thinking that Canada was the one who was desperate for a Trade Deal.

Truth is, Canada doesn't need a trade deal with the USA because Canada owns all the natural resources that the USA so desperately needs and Trump knows it.

@swirlie I understand that but this is going to hit both countries consumers hard, the difference being that the states have the mid terms coming up and this will only make things worse fur the Republicans so why do it... The last minute conditions appear to be so onerous that surely he knew they would be rejected

Oh, for sure Trump knew they would be rejected, but Trump also thought that Canada was desperate for a Trade Deal because Canada has been trying to put this in the rear view mirror for months now.

In Trump's mistaken misinterpretation of Canada's position, he was setting Canada up to be taken over by force economically by the USA, thereby completing Trump's goal to make Canada the 51st State.

PM Mark Carney got on Canadian TV this afternoon and stated those exact words, because he knows what Trump was planning to do but failed to achieve in the end when Canada walked out of the meeting and announced that all trade negotiations were off with the USA because they are an "unreliable trading partner".

In other words, Trump sent Lutnik into the meeting at the last minute to sabotage all efforts to strike a deal, because Trump mistakenly thought that Canada was desperate for a trade deal and would cave in to Lutnik's cheap talk. Truth is, Canada doesn't need the USA but the USA needs Canada.

"Sputnik" sounded better, @swirlie
