A View from Another Country

This morning I was sitting on a bus when two very articulate students got on and sat somewhere behind me. They were on their way to their university campus. Being only three of us on the top deck of the bus, it was easy to hear their conversation. And it was rather sad.

"Would you go to the USA at the moment?" one asked. His friend replied, "I don't think it will be safe to go there in my lifetime. That ICE is arresting grannies when they arrive, so what would they do to a boy with brown skin?"

Without debating the veracity of his claim about who is being arrested on arrival, it was a very small window into the opinion of young people I wouldn't normally get to speak to. I can remember a time when young people couldn't wait to go and try out the States for at least a holiday if not some work experience. How times have changed.

Well, apparently the quality of the education at University has gone somewhat downhill...because what they said was a load of eyewash.

ANY one can visit the USA as a tourist and never, ever have a problem. Skin color is definitely NOT a problem.

@4meAndyou 1) I doubt you can possibly blame the university for their perception. Universities teach academic subjects, not how and where to go on holiday!

2) No-one has said tourists are banned but the US customs and immigration people have given their country a bad name.

@carpediem I tend to agree. The sentiment in Europe in enormously biased against our country. THEIR immigration policies are so far left, I feel there will soon be very few residents remaining who are native to their countries!

@4meAndyou @carpediem As I said, It doesn't matter the exact details, the perception is of a poor reception to a deeply divided country. The bombast coming from there doesn't sit well, it appears, with at least these two intelligent young people. That's the sad thing.

@carpediem It's good that you can agree that it's awful. The rest? It's your view.
carpediem · M
@FreddieUK Yes, thank you. It is my view. I live in the country being dissed. I live in the country who's borders are now secure. You live in the country with fake news telling blatant lies about my country. Perhaps your news media need to focus on the problems unfolding in the UK. We both know neither of those things will happen. Yet another thing we can agree on.

By the way, the view of most Americans toward the UK has changed dramatically. To see why you can start with videos of people being arrested for social media posts. Also the rather dramatic anti-free speech activism we are seeing happening there and of course, uncontrolled migration. You folks have your own problems. Ever hear the proverb regarding people who live in glass houses?

@carpediem You'll be pleased to know that the main broadcast media are bound by law to be impartial (is that true there?) and we get a lot about the problems in our own country. The other great thing is that, as long as I don't physically threaten anyone or foment violence, I can say what I like anywhere. I wonder which billionaires with interests in stirring controversy for clicks are persuading you of this untruth. We're not too keen on kiddie porn being freely available and I will put my hands up to admit I'm ok with that.

@FreddieUK A billionaire is not convincing me of anything when I see a video of someone being arrested for a social media post. Nice bit of free speech. I am also against "kiddie porn". Much to your surprise, it's not "readily available" here. Did your "impartial" media tell you it was? It's illegal. Yes, very impartial.

You can't phycially threaten anyone or fomence violence here either. Also illegal. Perhaps you just don't "get it". I'm not surprised sir, after all, perhaps you've never lived in a country where Free Speech is literally writtenn into the constitution. I am proud to say that I do live in one.

I don't care about your society to be honest. I shake my head and remember, there was a reason the US revolted against Britain in the first place. I also don't besmirch your country here, unless of course provoked while defending the reputation of my own.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@carpediem Sounds to me like the rules are the same there as here. If someone was arrested then that's because the broke one of them. I'm glad you're proud of your country. It's a great country. We have loved much that has come from it (perhaps not the LDS 🙄) and consume a lot of media - even paying extra for it. I think this whole 'free speech' thing is designed to cause unnecessary division by people with an agenda. Because I am not parochial and the US domestic agenda affects other countries, we take an interest.

Thank you for your passionate and literate contribution. We diverge on political beliefs, but I genuinely like to engage with people who I disagree with.

@FreddieUK I tend to disagree that they were, in fact, intelligent. Because they didn't bother to do their research.
