Fun trivia about The Statue of Liberty

When it was gifted to the United States from France in 1886, it was a reddish copper color!! Over about 30 years, the copper went through an oxidation process and lost its copper color. Now the green we see is the result of that oxidation. 🫢🙂🗽

It was known that that would happen. It is called a patina. Oxidized copper is much stronger than regular copper and protects the statue. Oxidized aluminum is extremely strong but does not change colour as dramatically as copper. Now you know.
