Each EU state is still its own country, with its own language, culture, traditions, physical geography, etc.
Though there are politicians within it who do have federalist ideas summarised by their "ever closer union" cliche and the bloc's full title being the European Union of the Cities and Regions: spot the missing noun. This may be one reason the EU as it has become, is unpopular among many citizens of European nations, and perhaps even encouraging the rise of nationalist ideology in some.
