Opinion on America(ns)

On my news feed today there are some major complaints about Americans. However there are millions of wonderful Americans who are despondent about what Trump and MAGA are doing to their country and the world. Let's focus our anger on the politicians, CEOs, and proud boys who are creating this chaos.

Robert Reich wrote this:
"The good news is most of America is firmly against Trump on the big things. According to polls:

Most don’t want a Trump Republican budget that cuts almost $1 trillion out of Medicaid, food stamps, and child nutrition in order to make way for a $4.5 trillion tax cut mostly for the wealthy.

Most don’t want the richest person in the world destroying departments and agencies that protect our health, safety, financial security, and environment.

Most don’t side with Putin. Most don’t want us to abandon Ukraine. Most don’t want us to turn against our traditional allies that are democracies in favor of a bloodthirsty dictator.

Most don’t want tariffs that drive up the prices they pay for food, gas, housing, and clothing. Most understand that tariffs are taxes paid by American consumers.

Most don’t want a government of, by, and for billionaires.

Most believe in democracy and the rule of law and don’t want Trump trampling on the Constitution, acts of Congress, and federal court orders."

Please don't hate and punish all Americans. The majority are more upset than we Canadians are about what is happening to their democracy, their marginalised people, their economy, their environment, their health and education systems, their foreign policies, etc. We can be upset that they allowed Trump to be president and for allowing the billionaires free rein on the global exploitation of the people and the resources of the Earth. And we must take responsibility for allowing a lot of that to happen in Canada.

Today is not a day for vindictive anger. It is a day to deal with the problems and to prevent new ones. Be calm, be strong, and always be loving.

The problem is that most news coverage especially abroad, focuses on major stories which for the USA includes the President and senior politicians, and oligarchs like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos.

It's not helped too, for the USA, by its unending stream of films and TV shows that give what I've long suspected a very odd slant on American society. Sites like this don't help either: so much of the political discourse here on SW about US internal matters by US users, is intensely nasty - childish insults, swearing, exaggeration, little analysis, little or no concession.

So I suppose much of whatever really happens in America, what most Americans really do, is lost in the noise.
