Opinion on America(ns)

On my news feed today there are some major complaints about Americans. However there are millions of wonderful Americans who are despondent about what Trump and MAGA are doing to their country and the world. Let's focus our anger on the politicians, CEOs, and proud boys who are creating this chaos.

Robert Reich wrote this:
"The good news is most of America is firmly against Trump on the big things. According to polls:

Most don’t want a Trump Republican budget that cuts almost $1 trillion out of Medicaid, food stamps, and child nutrition in order to make way for a $4.5 trillion tax cut mostly for the wealthy.

Most don’t want the richest person in the world destroying departments and agencies that protect our health, safety, financial security, and environment.

Most don’t side with Putin. Most don’t want us to abandon Ukraine. Most don’t want us to turn against our traditional allies that are democracies in favor of a bloodthirsty dictator.

Most don’t want tariffs that drive up the prices they pay for food, gas, housing, and clothing. Most understand that tariffs are taxes paid by American consumers.

Most don’t want a government of, by, and for billionaires.

Most believe in democracy and the rule of law and don’t want Trump trampling on the Constitution, acts of Congress, and federal court orders."

Please don't hate and punish all Americans. The majority are more upset than we Canadians are about what is happening to their democracy, their marginalised people, their economy, their environment, their health and education systems, their foreign policies, etc. We can be upset that they allowed Trump to be president and for allowing the billionaires free rein on the global exploitation of the people and the resources of the Earth. And we must take responsibility for allowing a lot of that to happen in Canada.

Today is not a day for vindictive anger. It is a day to deal with the problems and to prevent new ones. Be calm, be strong, and always be loving.

Somehow, I beg to differentiate.

Wasn't it a majority of Americans that elected their new president in full knowledge of what was going to be the consequence?

It is not since the day before the election that he made it clear to the world what would happen if he was elected yet, a majority decided to follow his visions.

If something needs to change once and for all then it is the way that presidential elections are held. The constitution must be adapted and they have to get rid of the Electoral College process which gives a few selected people the right to chose for an entire group of the population.

Talk about a modern civilization.

and i suspect they will change even more (probably rapidly) as he continues to dismantle programs millions of people depend on just to survive.

You mentioned true Americans that are against Trump. I am definitely one of those I believe firmly in the Constitution, I served my country as many of my family members have back to 1775 I believe in freedom and democracy and I believe in the working class as well as personal freedom of speech and choice. I am very dissatisfied and angry that Trump and Elon are trying to attempt to do what they are doing. Build a rich oligarchy and punish the average everyday citizen with drastic Cuts restrictions on rights and everything else I think they ought to be subject to immediate deportation and subjugation and nothing less would make me even remotely happy. God Bless America and it's freedom-loving people. And down to the dictators worldwide

The problem is that most news coverage especially abroad, focuses on major stories which for the USA includes the President and senior politicians, and oligarchs like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos.

It's not helped too, for the USA, by its unending stream of films and TV shows that give what I've long suspected a very odd slant on American society. Sites like this don't help either: so much of the political discourse here on SW about US internal matters by US users, is intensely nasty - childish insults, swearing, exaggeration, little analysis, little or no concession.

So I suppose much of whatever really happens in America, what most Americans really do, is lost in the noise.

No doubt you will get a lot of moronic backlash from this post, but I for one thank you for acknowledging what you said. I do not agree at all with anything the current regime stands for.
Gibbon · 70-79, M
@Elisbch You have established your stance which explains much about your thought process.
